 Is short:
  1. 3rd segment of antenna shorter than 1 and 2
  2. tergite 5 is predominant yellow
  3. adbominal margin is yellow black
  4. front margin of Tergite 3 an 4 are black
  5. the shape of the black front margin is a stripe and at the end it only gets wider

C. verralli is a species that is not in the cheklist for spain!

¿Does that mean there is a population preserved in the mountains in Sierra Nevada from colder times?

In  een stadspark in het Genderdal in Eindhoven ving ik tijdens een wandeling met mijn moeder,  met de hand een klein zwart zweefvliegje met twee vrij grote vlekken op het tweede segment. Het bleek een vrouwtje T. lucida te zijn. Niet echt verwacht in zo'n omgeving.

Last few weeks not so much Syrphidae for me but still captured on 2 places in Belgium Paragus quadrifasciatus. 8 Juni I found one near Beloeil and last week one near Eupen.

On the 6th of june I caught a female C.piger fouraging on Rubus fruticosa on a camping place in the middle of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug.

C.piger op "de Bonte Vlucht"

Op 6 juni ving ik op camping De Bonte Vlucht tussen Doorn en Leersum (155 + 449) een vrouwtje C.piger op braam. Hoewel haar achterlijfs-einde enigszins verdonkerd was wezen de dikke achter-dijen, kromme achterschenen en aanliggend behaard borststuk (invergelijking met B.lentus) op piger.

Hi Kees,

It seems that this is a real Dutch C.piger invasion year. This phenomenon is already taking place the last 10 years I think. In the Verlinden from 1990 C.piger was known from several spots in the Adrennes but in the 90's I did find the specie on a regular basis in the Ardennes and Hautes Fagnes. I guess this line has reached the middle of Holland.
What is on th basis of this move? Global warming?

My first idea would be changing forest management in combination with forests growing older.
"Global warming" would only make the species disappear from the cooler Ardennes, to my opinion, rather than this expansion to lower area's.
And not only has this species been found north up to Amersfoort/Doorn.
Also west, near Achtmaal, south of Roosendaal close to the Belgian border.
More, formerly rare species, seem to expand or become less rare in the Netherlands, like Psilota anthracina.
Which species will follow?

Today I caught a female Ferdinandea after observing this hoverfly laying some eggs laying at the bottum of an oak (Quercus robur). At home I discovered that this female had yellow-red antennae bristels and only weak gray dust lines on the thorax. My first collection of the in The Netherlands very rare Ferdinandea ruficornis.
Vandaag, 29 mei, ging ik nog even zweefjes kijken nabij waar ik vorige week Chalcosyrphus piger ving. Behalve een mannetje Brachyopa pilosa op Dolle kervel en een nep Eupeodes nielseni (een vrouwtje E. luniger met rechthoekige buikplaatjes, maar zonder zwarte haren aan het begin van dij 3 en zonder zwarte zijrand op segment 5) niets opzienbarends. Wel zag ik een vrij klein vrouwtje Ferdinandea eitjes leggen aan de voet van een Zomereik. Toch maar gevangen met de hand - de laatste 2 jaar is Ferdinandea cuprea opeens vrij algemeen geworden nabij Malden -. Bij thuiskomst viel op dat de grijze strepen op het borststuk relatief vaag waren en onder de micropcoop zag ik de geelrode antenneborstels. Een vrouwtje Ferdinandea ruficornis dus!

After the two males of piger I found on 11 may, I also caught a female today (24 may).

Na de twee mannetjes piger op 11 mei ving ik vandaag (24 mei) ook 1 vrouwtje Chalcosyrphus piger niewt ver van de plek waar ik de twee mannen vond. De soort lijkt me nu toch weer redelijk ingeburgerd zou ik zeggen.....

Op 14 mei zag ik in een gebiedje tussen Malden en Molenhoek op manshoge bremstruiken niet een maar zeker tien vrouwtjes Callicera rufa. Later die dag ving ik lang de oude spoorlijn Nijmegen - Groesbeek op Vuilboom een mannetje Ceriana conopsoides. Vandaag - 21 mei - leverde het speuren op Brem in Heumensoord o.a. een vrouwtje Eupeodes nielsenii op. Langs de oude spoorlijn Nijmegen-Groesbeek dacht ik dan eindelijk mijn eerste Brachypalpoides lentus van het atlasblok van Malden te vangen. Dit vrouwtje zat op Kruipende boterbloem en na vangst bleek de achterlijfspunt ook rood i.p.v. zwart te zijn en het borststuk dof i.p.v. glimmen zwart, kortom een vrouwtje Chalcosyrphus piger. Uiteraard ook een nieuwe soort voor de omgeving van Malden.

Nice! It reminds me of the last time I saw them. Also on a Broom (Cytisus scoparius) we found with the Diptera weekend fellows a long time ago also like 10 of them in Germany... The area was a Pine tree area and the Broom where scattered over a sandy open terrain (and actually the only flowering plant in the wide area).

Zweefvliegen in zuidwest Nederland

De eerste week van mei ben ik enige dagen in het zuidwesten van Nederland op stap geweest. Op Goeree op verschillende plaatsen Cheilosia ranunculi. Op plaatsen met uitbundig bloeiende knolboterbloemen waren ze te vinden (Nieuwendijk bij Havenhoofd en in de wegberm van de weg ten oosten van Havenhoofd). De mannetjes zijn, ten minste in Nederland, eenvoudig in het veld te herkennen aan de heldergeel gekleurde vleugelbasis. De mannetjes C. albitarsis hebben verdonkerde vleugels zonder zweem van geel.

Op 5 mei, terug van vogeltrektellen op Breskens, kort in Mattemburgh ten zuiden van Bergen op Zoom rondgekeken. Veruit de leukste waarneming was een vrouwtje Criorhina pachymera dat zo vriendelijk was de oude beuk te inspecteren waar Liesbeth en ik tegenaan zaten. Op zo\'n 50 cm waren de brede zwarte middenstreep en de kleur, glans en beharing van borststuk en achterlijf prima te bestuderen.

1 male & 1 female Psilota anthracina near Groesbeek

1 female Eristalis picea near Amsterdam

Goed om te zien dat de website weer werkt! Er is toch behoefte aan zo'n plek om op de hoogte te blijven van leuke waarnemingen. Hopelijk lukt het nu om 'm permanent in de lucht te houden!

En dan meteen maar een duit in het zakje: op 11 mei ving ik een mannetje en een vrouwtje Psilota anthracina (de echte, zie artikel John Smit & Theo Zeegers in NFM) bij Groesbeek. Ze zaten op bloemen van fluitenkruid.

Ook leuk was de vangst van een vrouwtje Eristalis picea op 12 mei in het Amsterdamse Bos. In het Nederlandse kustgebied was deze soort tot nu toe alleen bekend uit het Vechtplassengebied.

Last long weekend I caught around 10 Psilota anthracina Meigen, 1822 on Hawthorn (Cartaegus / Meidoorn) in the Zonien woods south of Brussels. I also caught an other Xanthogramma leatum to finish the weekend even better. These warm days pay off!
Het pinksterweekend was weer goed. Ik vind rond 10 Psilota anthracina op meidoorn in het Zoniënwoud ten zuiden van Brussel. Om het lange weekend zeer goed af te sluiting ving ik nogmaals een Xanthogramma (Olbiosyrphus) leatum!

Yesterday I found two males of Chalcosyrphus piger just South of Amersfoort in Den Treek. One specimen on the trunk of a fallen tree, the other one on flowers of Sorbus. Last year this very rare species was found there for the first time. Other interesting syrphids: Eristalis picea (in number), Dasysyrphus tricinctus and Didea alneti.

Gisteren vond ik ten zuiden van Amersfoort twee mannetjes Chalcosyrphus piger. Eentje op een omgevallen boom, de andere op de bloemen van Lijsterbes (Sorbus). Na een zeer lange afwezigheid in Nederland wordt de soort de laatste jaren weer in Nederland gevangen. Bij Amersfoort was ze afgelopen jaar ook al gevangen door Theo Zeegers. Er schijnt dus nu werkelijk een populatie te zitten.Naast een serie meer algemene soorten waren andere leuke vangsten Eristalis picea (in aantal) op de lijsterbes, Didea alneti ook op lijsterbes en Dasysyrphus tricinctus.

Yesterday just after work I hopped down to the Zonien woods, to see if Sphiximorpha subsessilis was flying already and indeed this was the case (as expected) I noticed though that the wounds of all the trees except for one where closed by the tree. I wonder what will happen with the little ones.  Will the population die out? I fear for it to be honest. I will try to alter some young cutted branches to see if the tree is going to bleed there otherwise the polulation needs to move on to a new place to be discovered I would was :)

BUT... the title of this message does implies somthing of a different order: yes again a new specie for me! One nice male  Xanthogramma laetum (Fabricius, 1794)
 was caught on my way back to the car!! As it is a known specie of distraction at first glance I though of a Syrphus then a Xanthogramma but quite directly I knew I had the Xanthogramma laetum (Fabricius, 1794) (formaly known as Olbiosyrphus leatum btw)

Hi all,

Last weekend I was in Luxembourg. The weather was perfect and so was the almost first catch I had there: a Brachyopa panzeri Goffe, 1945. This was a new specie for me. Finally I have catched all possible Brachyopa's Other nice species that day back in Belgium on the way back where Criorhina floccosa and Epistrophe eurchroma.

A good start of may I would say ...

I just shot this photo of a Volucella in Granada in the south of Spain. The wings have black markings that I have not seen in Volucella zonaria before.

Is it possible that it is some other species?

Guillermo, your assumption is correct/ You have a Volucella elegans on photo here :) Up in the north here we do not know this specie very well. But in your area is it. Great photo. Can I use it on this website? My photo wasn't so good.

Yesterday I was in the Zoniënwoud, Roodklooster and saw a few Syrphidae: Episyrphus balteatus, Syrphus spec., Eristalis tenax and then a nice one one Criorhina floccosa. The Sphiximorpha isn't there yet but I keep an eye on those trees from now on. They changed the surroundings of the trees so I hop it will not affect the flies too much. The trees are now on the border of a huge grass area, fingers crossed!
Gisteren was ik in het Zoniënwoud (Roodklooster) on weer eens zweefvliegen to zien. Gelukkig toch nog een beetje. Episyrphus balteatus, Syrphus spec., Eristalis tenaxen een Criorhina floccosa. De Sphiximorpha was er nog niet maar ik hou het in de gaten. De bosbouwers hebben de omgeving 'aangepakt' dus ik hoop dat dit goed gaat komen. De bomen staan nu direct aan een grasveld. Hopen op het besten zullen we maar zeggen!

On the 24’th of februari 2008 I was on a trip near Lac du Der in France. We were looking for birds (Cranes) and saw about 23.000 of them. On this day we also visited a forest south of the village: Montier du Der ,situated south of Lac du Der, to look for Dendrocopus medius, which we saw indeed. The whether was fine: 18 degrees Celsius, clear sky.

We saw some Butterflies , wild Bees and some Hoverflies: mainly Episyrphus balteatus and Eristalis tenax and I caught one species which I named at first Criorhina asilica. However, being home again it became clear that it was a female Brachypalpus valgus.

I was very excited catching my first syrphidae of the year of such a species so early in the season.

fraaie foto van deze toch best bijzondere zweefvlieg in Europa. Op de foto is duidelijk de vorm van de antennes te zien. Dit is een heel goed kenmerk om Brachypalpus valgus te onderscheiden van B. laphriphormis.

Via the photo I can't identify the specie very well. I hope you have it at home and you are sure of your identification. To me it looks like a B.laphriformis but I can't see the face in frontal view (must have a vertical black stripe) and the thoraxcic dorsum need to be shiny but I have the feeling it doesn't.

Still I am jealous as I only saw a couple of E.balteatus and E.tenax  (and on top that I am sitting to much behind a desk indoors )

Yesterday I saw while enjoying the warm weather a female Eristalis tenax and a female Episyrphus balteatus. My first 2 Syrphids this year :)

Because of the unusual warm temperatures, several overwintering syrphids were already encountered on februari 8-10. Mostly females of Episyrphus balteatus, but also some females of Eristalis tenax and a female of Scaea selenitica. However, also I observed a male of E. balteatus! Last year, I have encountered a few males of E. auricollis in early spring. Overwintering of males of syrphids seems to become more common. Maybe because of the very soft winter temperatures.
Afgelopen vrijdag, 8 februari in Arnhem mijn eerste Episyrphus balteatus. Op 9 februari bij de begraafplaats van Malden zag ik tientallen vrouwtjes E. balteatus, een tiental vrouwtjes Eristalis tenax en een vrouwtje Scaeva selenitica. Enkel overwinteraars dus. Meest opmerkelijk was echter een mannetjes E. balteatus die onder meer opviel omdat hij relatief fel oranjegeel gekleurd was terwijl de meeste overwinterende vrouwtjes E. balteatus vrij donker getint zijn. Vorig jaar had ik hier ook al overwinterende mannetjes E. auricollis. Kennelijk kunnen door de softe winter nu ook mannetjes zweefvliegen overwinteren.

Its most probably a Merodon. You better capture it as genital identification is needed for a positive identification... I will be happy to identify it for you if you like.

As a general rule photographed Syrphidae are better to capture so you have a live reference to it to be absolutely sure of its identity.

Thanks for your offer Bastian. At present I photograph insects while I work as a geologist in the field, so I really do not have the time to capture them. Although I will think of it for the future. I have the impression there is a lot to do concerning syrphids in Spain.

In 2006, I collected inded a female of Melangyna cingulata in the Drome near Die. You can't key it out with the key of van der Veen (2006). It is not in there! At this site, I also collected a few females of Melanostoma dubium. They look very diiferent from each other. Thus both species at the same site. I might visit this place again this year in early may.
