Flowers visited by adults: umbellifers; Alliaria, Euphorbia, Ligustrum, Prunus, Solidago, Sorbus aucuparia (Speight 2010). An extended list of flowers visited by T. primus is provided by Flügel (2004).
Larvae of T. primus were found by Leclercq (1944) and Sedlag (1967) in aphid galls on Artemisia vulgaris, but it is still undescribed. Larvae have been reported feeding on Cryptosiphum artemisiae and Therioaphis riehmi (Aphididae) (Rojo et al. 2003).
Flight period: from mid of May to June and July to beginning September, with a peak in August (Speight 2010).
This species ranges from southern Norway south to southern France and round the Mediterranean to Italy, the former Yugoslavia and Israel; from Britain (southern England) eastwards through central Europe to Roumania and the Ukraine; from the Caucasus on through Asia to Sakhalin and Korea (Speight 2010).
Adult flies among tall ground vegetation (Speight 2010).
Preferred environment: open ground, waste ground (including road verges, railway embankments and quarries), thermophilous forest fringes and gardens.
