notes
Nael Evenhuis: Treated species within it as masculine (brevipilosus, inarmatus, apicaudus, parvus) one eponym (sacawajae), and two as feminine (pigra, metallifera). Resullt is equivocal -- Art. 30.1.4.4 is unclear about equivocal treatment. It says that the gender of an -odes suffix is masculine unless “treated as [another gender] by combining it with an adjectival species-group name in another gender form”. In this case Shannon did indeed fulfill 30.1.4.4 “technically” by having combined it with an adjectival species group name in another gender (pigra and metallifera), but he ALSO combined it with three masculine names too. How to treat then? Poor wording for 30.1.4.4. | Doug Yanega : Having epithets of two genders in the OD is super confusing. As you note, the wording of 30.1.4.4 is written so the assigned gender would be feminine, if very literally interpreted. Frankly, I'm okay with accepting that, given that the name is based on Xylota.
