General description

Rhinobaccha species have dichoptic males; alula and anal lobe reduced; anterior anepisternum bare; metasternum bare; lower face strongly produced into a snout, facial tubercle absent; scutum with lateral yellow vitta; and abdomen unmargined, slightly petiolate.

New description:

MALE.

Head: Face without tubercle, strongly produced forward and dorsad into a snout, yellow, black ventrally, with medial broad black vitta, with short, scattered yellow pile; gena narrow, black; lunule black; frontal triangle yellow on basolateral 2/3, with a medial black vitta joining facial vitta ventrally, yellow pilose; broadly dichoptic, eye bare; vertical triangle black, black pilose; antenna orangish, basoflagellomere orange, darker dorsally; occiput black, white pollinose, yellow pilose ventrally, black pilose dorsally.

Thorax: Scutum shiny black with short dark pile; postpronotum yellow, bare; notopleuron yellow; scutellum black with basal yellow fascia extending on postalar callus, dark pilose with 2-4 longer bristle-like setae, subscutellar fringe absent. Pleuron black, except posterior anepisternum yellow on dorsal and posterior margins, anterior and dorsomedial anepimeron yellow, and katatergum with broad yellow macula; anterior anepisternum bare; metasternum bare; calypter yellow; plumula absent; halter yellow, capitulum dark; spiracular fringes yellow. Wing: Wing membrane hyaline, stigma yellowish; mainly microtrichose, cells R bare very basally, and ostal cell bare on basal 1/3; vein M1 sinuous; alula absent and anal lobe very reduced; wing long pile fringe on posterior margin. Legs: Entirely yellow, metatibia and metatarsi brown, metafemur somewhat brownish-yellow.

Abdomen: Slightly petiolate, unmargined. Dorsum mainly black, except tergum 1 yellow on basolateral corners; terga 2, 3 and 4 black with two lateromedial elongate, oblique yellow maculae, the maculae of tergum 4 subbasal; male genitalia large.

FEMALE.

Similar to male with abdominal tergum 5 with a pair of vittate yellow maculae.

Distribution

Endemic species of Sri Lanka.
