In his original description, Hervé-Bazin (1923a) gave a short diagnosis of his new species, Olbiosyrphus clarus, based on material from Laos, Tonkin (Vietnam) and Java. In 1926, Hervé-Bazin redescribed this species, providing more details about adult morphology and included three figures (habitus, head and pleuron), and the type material. His illustrations showed perfectly the abdominal pattern and coloration of legs, pleuron pattern and, the most diagnostic character, the angle between eyes. He designated a male type from Chapa, Tonkin (now Vietnam) collected on 8.vi.1916, and designated a male cotype from the same location (Chapa, 11.vii.1918) and three more male cotypes from Laos (Louang-Prabang, 12.ii.1915; Nan-Long, 28.iv.1918; Dang-Hé, 29.iv.1918). He also mentioned in his collection another male from Java in poor condition.

MALE.
Tête jaune orange. Vertex brun Antennes écartées à la base, rougeâtres. Thorax noir à pubescence jaune, nettement et largement bordé de jaune; écusson entièrement jaune, à poils noirs. Abdomen noir velouté: 2e segment avec 2 taches en demi-lunes, 3e et 4e avec une bande transversale continue, 5e avec une bande interrompue au très fortement échancrée en arrière, jaunes. Hypopyge jaune. Bard postérieur du 4e segment luisant. Pattes jaunes; tarses antérieurs et intermédiaires rernbrunis; pattes postérieures: quart apical des fémurs, les tibias et les tarses noirs au noirâtres.

MALE.
Tête entièrement jaune-orangé, sauf le triangle vertical, qui est brun, et petit. Yeux nus, grands. Partie postérieure de la tête grise. Pubescence jaune, excepté au vertex et sur le front, où elle est noire. Epistome large, tubercule facial faible. Antennes écartées à la base. jaune-rougeâtres, 3e art. ovalaire, rembruni en dessus; soie courte, épaisse a la base, très brièvement pubescente. Dessus du thorax noir olivâtre, presque mat; pubescence courte; jaune roussâtre. Sur les côtés, une bordure droite et nette d'un beau jaune orangé à pubescence jaune dorée, longue: flancs du thorax semblables, sauf deux très petites taches brunes sous l'insertion des ailes. Milieu de la poitrine noir olivâtre, en forme de tache carrée. Ecusson jaune-orangé, à poils noirs. Abdomen noir velouté. Extrémité des angles postérieurs du premier segment jaune. Second segment avec deux taches en demi-lunes formant une bande transversale largement interrompue. Troisième el quatrième segment avec une bande transversale dans leur moitié antérieure, droite en avant, à peine échancrée en arrière et faiblement élargie sur les côtés; bord postérieur du 4e segment luisant, à reflets bleu-d'acier. Cinquième segment avec une bande transversale très fortement échancrée au milieu, parfois assez largement interrompue. Toutes ces taches et bandes atteignent les bords latéraux. Hypopyge jaune, petit. Pubescence de l'abdomen longue et jaune sur le premier segment et la moitié antérieur du deuxième, plus courte et entièrement noire sur le reste de l'abdomen, même sur les parties claires. Hauches et pattes jaunes; tarses antérieurs et intermédiaires rembrunis, surtout à l'extrémité ; pattes postérieures avec le tiers apical des fémurs et les tarses noirs, les tibias noirs-brunâtres avec la base et un anneau médian un peu plus clair. Pubescence des pattes jaune sur les parties claires, sauf une petite touffe de poils noirs à l’extrémité des fémurs intermédiaires, brunes sur les parties foncées. Ailes uniformément et finement pubescentes, hyaline; cellule et stigma jaunâtres, 3e nervure faiblement ondulée, vena spuria nette et presque droite. Cuillerons et balanciers jaunes.

MALE.
Head: Face broad with facial tubercle, yellow, yellow pilose; gena yellow, yellow pilose; lunule yellow; frontal triangle yellow, black pilose; vertical triangle black, black pilose; antenna brownish, basoflagellomere orange, darker dorsally; arista brown, bare; holoptic, angle between eyes approximately 120°; eye contiguity about 2 times or more as long as the distance between angle of eyes and antennal bases when viewed from above; occiput black, silvery pollinose, withish pilose on ventral half and yellow pilose on dorsal pilose.
Thorax: Scutum black with almost entire dorsum covered by bluish-silvery pollinosity except sublateral shiny black vitta and lateral yellow vitta, with lateral broad yellow vitta from postpronotum to scutellum, yellow pilose; postpronotum yellow, bare; scutellum yellow, black pilose, subscutellar fringe complete with dark pile. Pleuron mostly yellow, except meron black and katepisternum black ventrally; metasternum pilose; calypter yellow; plumula yellow; halter yellow; spiracular fringes yellow. Wing: Wing membrane hyaline, stigma dark yellow; mainly microtrichose; cell R bare on basoanterior 1/2 until the furca of cell R2+3, and cell BM with small bare area very close to anterior margin. Alula broad, microtrichose. Legs: Entirely yellow except pro- and mesotarsi dark yellow; metafemur black on apical 2/5, metatibia and metatarsus black.
Abdomen: slightly oval, 2nd to 5th terga marginated. Dorsum mainly black, black pilose dorsally and laterally except 1st tergum yellow pilose and 2nd tergum yellow pilose laterally on anterobasal 1/2 and dorsally on yellow maculae; 1st tergum black; 2nd tergum black with 2 mesolateral round yellow maculae, extended forward laterally to anterolateral tergum margin (like “golf club” shaped spots), yellow lateral margin on anterior 1/2; 3rd tergum black with subbasal broad yellow fascia; 4th tergum black with subbasal yellow fascia broadening towards lateral margins; 5th tergum black with 2 subtriangular yellow maculae broadening towards lateral margins, thus lateral margins all yellow; sterna yellow, yellow and black pilose.
FEMALE.
Similar to male but differs as follow: frons yellow; 2nd tergum with 2 yellow maculae joined medially forming a fascia; yellow maculae on 5th tergum closer, separated by a narrow black vitta.
